Carlowrie Castle

Carlowrie Castle mixes contemporary modern luxury within a traditional setting. Built in 1852, the Castle is privately owned by Andrew Marshall. Today it’s one of Edinburgh’s most unique venues. Only 10 minutes from Edinburgh International Airport and 20 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh, it’s one of the most convenient castles to stay in Scotland.  When guests arrive at the Castle, which is set within 32 acres of idyllic grounds, they feel miles away from anywhere. The best of all worlds – tradition and heritage on the outside, combined with contemporary modern sophistication on the inside.

Andrew transformed Carlowrie into the spectacular venue it is today, and it is now being recognised as one of the top 3 boutique venues in Europe. Alongside leisurely getaways, it’s a popular destination for a Scottish castle weddings. Each one of its 9 luxurious bedrooms are individually designed and decorated with original works by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists. Carlowrie’s bedrooms all incorporate handmade beds and cabinetry from Atelier 1852 and feature sumptuous soft furnishings. Each bathroom features handmade roll top baths, marble tiles, underfloor heating and walk-in showers. Duvets and pillows are filled with Hungarian goose down.

The Walled Garden has a tennis court, perfectly manicured lawns to play croquet, boules and 32-acres of estate to keep busy, including picnicking in one of the grass paddocks to abseiling down the castle walls. For those who enjoy pampering, they can relax with a yoga or pilates session, lose themselves in a tailored massage or get creative at an art class in the Orangery.

Dining at Carlowrie is a culinary treat, our Head Chef is passionate about two things: exceptional quality local produce and innovation in the kitchen. A firm believer that we have the best ingredients available on our doorstep, his menus are inspired by seasonal and local, and his skills developed through stages in some of Scotland’s top boutique hotels and restaurants. Chef and his brigade see Carlowrie at the forefront of our thriving culinary scene, continuing to delight and inspire our eclectic range of discerning clients.

The contemporary interiors, scale and proportion of the rooms at Carlowrie Castle provide a dramatic showcase for Andrew’s international private collection of ‘Urban’ and ‘Pop’ art – a unique insight into the work of the world’s emerging artists. As well as covering traditional street artists now working in formal gallery spaces, it also covers artists using more traditional media with subject matters that deal with contemporary urban culture, political issues and the irony of today’s mass media and culture. There are over 70 pieces of art from 25 countries.

Carlowrie is an exclusive use venue, and for those looking to stay in a Scottish castle, it’s a blissful retreat for families and friends to gather. Equally, colleagues who wish to escape the busy rush of the city will enjoy the perfectly serene country estate.
