2022 will see the 150th tournament of the Open Championship, hosted at the iconic St. Andrews Golf Course on the East coast of Scotland. This will be the 30th time that the historic club has welcomed the world-famous sporting event. Speaking publicly, Royal & Ancient golf clubs Chief Executive Martin Slumbers said he expected, “Exceptional demand”.

To date, the Championship, which will be played at St. Andrews from 10th-17th July 2022, has seen 85% of its packages already purchased. Ticket ballots for the much-anticipated occasion will run from 1st July until the 4th of October 2021, with this being the first time that organisers allocate attendance by a Wimbledon-inspired system. In a statement about the new process, officials gave reassurance that there will be a balance of allocations to “Ensure every generation of fan will be able to attend the celebrations”.

A brief history of golf in Scotland

Scotland’s relationship with the game of golf is one of great importance. It’s widely accepted that the sport originated here in the Middle Ages, with the first records dating back to the 15th century. The Old Course at St Andrews is thought to be the oldest golf course in the world, and so it comes as no surprise that it has been chosen to bring the game home for this exciting anniversary.
