Mull of Des

Mill Of Dess Lodge

The Mill of Dess Lodge sits amongst the 428 acre Lower Dess Estate. The estate lies in Royal Deeside on the north bank of the river Dee, just downstream from the Balmoral Estate. It enjoys a very private and secluded position in a totally unspoilt rural position. The lodge boasts uninterrupted views over the valley to the Forest of Birse – and yet, is less than an hour’s drive from Aberdeen.

Lower Dess was purchased in 2011 by Jeremy and Jenny Clayton who, in becoming Scottish landowners, were fulfilling a life-long dream. Since buying the estate, two generations of the Clayton family have carefully and accurately restored much of the estate to its full potential.

This renovation programme has culminated in the complete transformation of an old farm steading into the luxurious Mill of Dess Lodge. It offers guests an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy top end comfort, cuisine and service in a charming and relaxed environment.

This unique accommodation near Balmoral can accommodate 20 guests under one roof in style and comfort. The generous size of each bedroom, the sitting room and the dining room means that it can seat a full house without feeling crammed or crowded. We provide a home-from-home for special family celebrations and a discreet and comfortable venue for corporate events. The Lower Dess team research the particular needs of each guest and plan meticulously ahead to ensure every detail is covered. Any unforeseen situations are dealt with in manner of swan-like calm!

The Mill of Dess Lodge offers 10 double bedrooms each with a private bathroom.  Nine of these bedrooms have super-king double beds (which can be split into twins). Finished to the highest decorative standards by well-regarded Scottish designers, the bedrooms are separated into two accommodation wings – South and North. Each bedroom is named after a pool on the adjacent Lower Dess fishing beat. All bedding is allergy and dust mite free and each room has a range of soft and firm pillows to meet those individual “Princess and the Pea” needs.

Every room offers Sky TV, Wi-Fi, room safe, hair dryer, complimentary bathroom products by Scottish Fine Soaps and the ultimate in fluffy white robes to ensure our guests’ in-room comfort. Three of the bathrooms offer a separate shower as well as a deep and stylish bath. One of these shower bathrooms has disabled access. There is a generous supply of fluffy white towels with an impossibly high GSM rating and lashings of hot water.

The estate owns over two miles of the north bank of the river Dee which is renown for it’s salmon fishing. There are sixteen pools and four rods available on this beat by separate arrangement. The rod fee includes the services of the estate ghillie, Eoin Smith, who has fished the river for thirty five years. He is happy to share his experience and skill with fellow fishermen. The award-winning Upper Hut is available for all rods to use during their tenancy.

There is a very comprehensive list of Things To Do on the Lower Dess Estate website that include walking, golf, cycling, horse-riding, castle tours, art galleries and retail. The team work closely with the local providers so, for example, if guests wanted to hire bicycles delivery to the Lodge can be arranged. Regrettably, this does not apply to the horses! There is a super-reliable taxi service for those who don’t have their own transport. Guests arriving by helicopter can land in the adjacent field and only need to contact Jetlogic to book!

The Lodge is fully staffed and catered. Private guests can book the accommodation on an ‘Exclusive Use’ basis of the whole house. Corporate guests can take the Lodge on a day rate or for a more extended period. Antonia in the Sales Office is happy to provide bespoke quotes based on the individual and particular requirements of each guest, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch:
